GENERAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT RECREATION DIVISION
SEEKING JR. LIFEGUARD Ages: 16-17
(Jr. Lifeguard must have a valid work permit if hired)
$15.38/HR

Under general supervision, assists water-related recreational activities at a municipal swimming pool.

Examples of Duties

  • Enforces safety regulations at municipal swimming pools.
  • Enforces requirements for bathing before entering pools.
  • Inspects swimmers for cleanliness and infectious diseases.
  • Monitors swimming activities.
  • Assists swimmers in distress.
  • Administers first aid.
  • Assists individuals in learning to swim.
  • Arranges lifesaving equipment around pool.
  • Monitors activities to ensure adherence to rules and safety procedures and to maintain order.
  • Cleans pool and deck area.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications (required):
Completion of two (2) years of high school.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of resuscitation and lifesaving methods.
  • Knowledge of materials and methods used to maintain the cleanliness of pools and deck areas.
  • Skill in administering first aid.
  • Skill in specific swimming techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and provide clear instructions.
  • Ability to interact effectively with other departmental personnel and the general public.
  • Ability to swim.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Special Requirements:
  • A valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate is preferred, but not required.
  • A valid Community Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate as issued by the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association of Michigan is preferred, but not required. Certification must be obtained within one (1) week of hire.
  • A valid Community First Aid Certificate or standard First Aid Certificate is preferred, but not required.
  • Candidates considered for placement in this classification must Swim 300 yards continuously using the following strokes in the following order within the standard time set by the City of Detroit Recreation Department: 
200 yards front crawl, using rhythmic breathing, having a stabilizing and propellant kick.
100 yards breaststroke, using pull, breath, kick, and glide sequence.

  • Candidates considered for placement in this classification must be able to successfully perform the following activities:            
Back boarding.
 Treading water for two (2) minutes, using only legs.
 Swimming twenty (20) yards, retrieving a brick, and returning holding brick with both
 hands.
 Rescues.

  • If a candidate is 17 years of age or younger, they must submit a School District Work Permit prior to completion of the hiring process.
Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.  Minimum age requirement – 16.
